I also have to be careful to use drivers from the CD, not the website, as many of those drivers cause ATI and/or Windows to crash randomly.These issues, and other Windows I've given up guys. I also discovered that I needed to unload any existing drivers before being able to load the ALSA drivers for my card. The ATI.2 drivers need to be built against the XFree86 tree, and cannot be built against /usr/X11R6.

These instructions were written for the newer Radeon cards, but older cards using, for instance, the Rage 128 chipsets should also work correctly although you will need to make some adjustments
