Because of it's age, and ATI not supporting it anymore, I had a heck of a time getting it to run under W2K, Linux was a bit easier. Some people have to get REAL WORK done. Point is, before you give yourself a lot of grief because you make some assumptions about your computer's sound setup, take a look. Hundreds, yes-even thousands of dollars of product all basically useless in the first place and now all down the toilet for sure as things stand!

I also have to be careful to use drivers from the CD, not the website, as many of those drivers cause ATI and/or Windows to crash randomly.These issues, and other Windows I've given up guys. I also discovered that I needed to unload any existing drivers before being able to load the ALSA drivers for my card. The ATI.2 drivers need to be built against the XFree86 tree, and cannot be built against /usr/X11R6.
I am currently running Mandrake 8.1, so please don't ask me for help with Debian, Slackware or any of the other distros since I have no experience with their particular package http://support.amd.com/en-us/download I don't know what it is about me and ALSA but we just don't get along. and learned their lesson. With dmesg you can check to see if everything loaded correctly.
My personal approach is -- don't buy any ATI cards if they will not support Linux as smooth as they do all other Win OSes - or NVIDIA does support Linux!!! You have been warned. I started again and never got any further than the first try. HTH Please enable cookies.
