It is best to install the driver via a package built for your distribution, which will typically include the necessary kludges to make things work. It seems as if only Xyyyy-cards are affected. I was using Fedora core 6, but now have installed Feisty i386. I thought in your instruction on post number 4, i was supposed to be installing the drivers that i downloaded from ati.
Reverting back to the radeon driver in 2.6.15 solves these - so it is likely the ATI proprietary driver causing some problems. http://advianetwork.com/ati-driver/ati-driver-installer-8-23-7.html When viewing /var/log/messages, it revealed that each second, there was a message atieventsd: Unable to bind control socket to /var/run/atieventsd.socket: Address already in use. I can't reproduce them too consistently, but these _never_ occur with the radeon driver / mesa or under 2.6.14.x. I'm working with a Big Desktop 2800x1050 (1400x1050 each monitor) I use fluxbox compiled with xinerama support, and all windows maximizes ok i can run glxgears spanned across both display, yes, The problem is present only if the fglrx kernel module is loaded, but independently of whether (CONFIG_HIGHMEM) is enabled. Symbol vgaHWGetIndex from module /usr/lib/modules/drivers/fglrx_drv.o is unresolved!
Before you apply any of these, make sure that you really need them, as some distributions include all the necessary patches with the appropriate package (e.g. ERROR: x11-drivers/ati-drivers-8.21.7-r1 failed. The problem is unclear (possibly associated with an incorrect modeline setting) and no known solution exists except to use the open source radeon drivers. http://advianetwork.com/ati-driver/ati-driver-installer-8-23-7-x86-64-run.html i'm trying to send you a private message but is disabled...
